Sunny Days Ahead

Did you know that the Pacific Northwest has one of the highest rates of sunglasses sales? A statistic like that seems more likely in Maui, or San Diego, or Miami, wouldn’t you agree? Well, our gray and gloomy weather contributes to sales because people forget where they stashed their sunglasses for long stretches, and once the sun comes out in the early Spring, the easiest solution is often to just buy another pair.

Choosing Sunglasses

When choosing sunglasses, whether you’re buying them off the rack with no corrective lenses, or getting your most recent prescription in a new pair of trendy sunglasses, there are some non-negotiables when shopping for sunglasses. These non-negotiables don’t necessarily mean you’ll shell out an arm and a leg though, so keep reading.

Cheap or Expensive? What’s the Difference?

One major difference between cheap and expensive sunglasses lies in the lens quality. High-quality lenses, often found in more expensive sunglasses, tend to provide better protection against harmful UV rays. While cheaper sunglasses may claim to offer “100% UV protection”, it’s important to remember that not all lenses are created equal. If the manufacturing process is less stringent, the protection may be uneven or less effective over time. Thus, are expensive sunglasses better for your eyes? In terms of consistent, long-lasting UV protection, the answer leans towards a ‘yes’. With that said let’s get one thing clear, when we talk about cheap sunglasses we are talking about the $10 price range. Once you get above $15, you really should expect your lenses to have full UV protection, so be on the lookout for that. “Expensive” doesn’t mean a car payment; just more than you might pay at the gas station for a fast solution to a sunny day.

Sunglasses and Healthy Eyes

More important than preventing a headache from squinting into the sun, sunglasses really do protect the health of your eyes. Good sunglasses shield your eyes from harmful UV rays, reducing the risk of eye diseases like cataracts and macular degeneration. They also lessen glare, improving visual comfort when you’re out in the sun. Looking cool with a great pair of frames is just an added bonus.
