As eye care professionals serving patients in University Place, Tacoma, and Lakewood, we enjoy helping our patients find their newest pair of designer frames, and during your fitting, you will be offered the option to add an anti-reflective (AR) coating. But what exactly is this coating, and is it worth it? Here we answer our patients’ most asked questions.

What is Anti-reflective Coating?

Anti-reflective coating (AR) is a coating that is applied to the surface of the lens. This improves how light is transmitted through the lens, thus reducing glare and reflections. It also gives you sharper and clearer vision.

It is applied through a highly technical process that includes a thorough cleaning and vaporizing the coating with electrons. We found this video that helps explain this complex and fascinating process.

How does it reduce glare?

The coating on the lenses allows more light to pass through the lens. This reduces glare on your lens.

Can it reduce eye strain?

Yes! Because more light is passing through your lenses your eyes can relax. The coating also makes your vision clearer and sharper, which means it’s much easier for you to focus and see.

Is AR the same as an anti-scratch coating?

Short answer, no. But what you should know is that the newer anti-reflective coatings are designed to resist scratches more readily.

This, combined with the fact that most manufacturers offer a scratch warranty on their anti-reflective coatings means you should be able to avoid scratches.

And if they do, the manufacturer will likely replace them.

Do have to care for my glasses differently?

When you pick up your AR-coated glasses, we will recommend the cleaner that is right for your lenses. You will want to avoid lens cleaners with harsh chemicals. And you shouldn’t clean AR-coated lenses without wetting them first. Using a dry cloth (or the hem of your t-shirt) could cause scratches.

Are all AR coatings the same?

Nope! AR coatings are tailored to meet your needs. For example, if you spend a lot of time on the computer, you can get an AR coating that will help reduce your exposure to blue light. You can also have a UV coating added to the backside of the lenses to help combat the dangers of UV rays.

If you’re ready to get started, give us a call today to schedule your comprehensive eye exam. We look forward to helping you get the right glasses that fit your lifestyle.
